My Top Ten In the tradition of Rolling Stone Magazine (and because I have nothing else to blog about), I give you my Top Ten:
1. LOST - Best tv show ever. Physics. Philosophy. Literature. Science. Makes me think so much that my brain hurts after every ep. 2. Alize' - Cognac and passion fruit juice. YUM! 3. The Black Keys - Great music. Their new cd "Attack and Release" is brilliant. It absolutely aches. And it was produced by Danger Mouse. Extra cool. 4. The art of Michael Parkes - Have no idea who Michael Parkes is? Take a look at the background of my MySpace page. His work is ethereal, erotic, imaginative and looks like nothing else I've ever seen (although he's obviously influenced a LOT of tody's fantasy artists). 5. "No Country For Old Men" - One of the best movies I've ever seen. Can't get it out of my head. 6. Aquafina Flavor Splash- It's water. It's fruit flavored. It has 0 calories. So it's tasty and good for you! 7. Old photographs - I love looking at antique photos. It's so cool to see the fashions and hairstyles of bygone eras. I always ponder the people in the photos too: what were they thinking when the photo was taken? who were they? what were they like? I especially love the old photos I have of my own family, even though I'm not sure who the people are in half the photos. 8. Yankee Candle clove scented candles- They were my favorites and they stopped making them. Bastards! 9. Sugar Skulls - They're macabre and pretty at the same time. I have them on clothes, shoes, artwork and bags. Beau's most recent tattoo is a Sugar Skull. 10. Southern Gothic Revival - my husband's band. They're damn fine musicians and they've written some incredible tunes. Go listen to them right now, okay?!
Now you guys go do a Top Ten!

There's a guy that hangs out in our store everyday that has very severe Tourette's Syndrome. He growls, clucks, chuckles, grimaces, mumbles, etc. almost constantly and, more disturbingly, violently slaps and punches himself in the head. He ocassionally works in our receiving room, whenever they have work for him to do. Last week he had what is referred to as a rage or storm in our store. He threw chairs in the cafe, was screaming that he wanted to kill himself, and was curled up on the floor growling and rocking back and forth. He nearly punched my manager when he went over to check on the guy. The police and an ambulance were called, but in the end he was released to his Mom. They said that his medication had been changed and that he skipped a dose. I happen to know that he skips doses on a pretty regular basis because the meds make him sleepy. I also know that he believes he's posessed by demons and that he's involved in "spiritual warfare". Half the people at work treat this guy like he's a harmless kid. The other half of us are well aware that he's an adult, and are afraid that he poses a danger to himself and others. I'm not sure what (if anything) I should do about this situation. I feel sorry for the guy, but I also feel like he should be getting more help than he is and that we're just making the situation worse by pretending everything is okay. Ideas? Opinions? Our Weekend Beau and I went to the Masquerade on Saturday to see one of my favorite bands, Murder By Death. I really enjoyed the show, but they seemed a little tired. Odd since their tour just started. Still, the music was great. They're Alt-Country and sound a bit like a really depressed, morbid Johnny Cash. And they have some great songs about death, hanging, the devil and werewolves. They're on my friend's list if you'd like to sample them. Their opening bands, Kiss Kiss and O'Death were much in the same Alt-Country vein and were both quite good. O'Death had one of the most amazing drummers I've ever seen and his kit included a chain, a gas can a gourd. Incredible. The crowd was great too. They actually came to see the bands and not to drink, smoke and make asses out of themselves. That was a nice change from some of the last shows we went to see. Afterwards we had dinner at R.Thomas. YUM! We spent Sunday cleaning the house and washing the dogs. And we watched "American Gangster" which was really good. It was actually better than I had expected. "We got us a reader!" A few people have asked me to recommend books lately, so I thought I'd do a book blog. Here's a few of the books I've been reading lately: "The Society of S" by Susan Hubbard - I had stopped reading vampire fiction because it all seemed to be the same old, tired stories with the names changed. This book is quite different. It's a beautifully written coming-of-age story that just happens to involve vampires, a secret society, family secrets, science & philosophy. It's a different take on the vampire mythos. "Four Letter Word" short story anthology - Each fictional letter is a short story. Neil Gaiman's entry is one of the creepiest obsessive love stories I've ever read! "100 Young Americans by Michael Franzini - Gorgeous photographs and interviews with 100 young Americans from 50 states. They are jocks, punks, prom queens, goths, a prostitute, church girls, skaters, druggies, street kids, gamers and everything in between and beyond. The interviews are inspiring, moving and sometimes infuriating, but always interesting. Even if you don't check out the book, look up the web site (100youngamericans.com) or their MySpace. "The DMZ" (graphic novel) by Brian Wood - Manhattan becomes the DMZ (demilitarized zone) when anti-establishment militias overtake it. Main character Matt Roth, a reporter, gets caught up in the fight when he gets trapped in the DMZ while doing a story. Part Road Warrior, part Clockwork Orange, part Warriors. My favorite comic at the moment. "Pride Of Baghdad" (graphic novel) - by Brian K. Vaughn - A look at the Iraq War through the eyes of a Pride of Lions who escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during an American bombing raid. Beautifully written. Amazing art. Completely heartbreaking. So....What are you guys reading? Current Mood: nerdyCurrent Music: "Young At Heart" - Tom Waits | | Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 | | 2:50 am |
Party Party Beau and I had a busy Saturday. I was supposed to go see a friend play at a bar in Buckhead. Something I'd been promising to do for quite awhile. I probably should have asked him what time he was playing because when I called the bar just before 7pm, I was told that he was just about to go on. The bar is nearly an hour away from where I live. We would have missed his whole set. Dammit. So Bellian I owe you big time. Had sushi at Sake Gura. Bought some cds a Best Buy (The Black Keys, the new Panic At The Disco, the new Gnarls Barkley and a Tom Waits collection). Yep. I'm that one person who still trades hard earned funds for actual cds. I look at it as an investment in the artists that I love listening to. If they make money making music, they may continue to make music. And that makes me a happy girl. So far, the Black Keys has been the best of the bunch. Later we went to a party at Stephanie and Jeff's. Saw a lot of old friends, met some great new people. Had much fun. Drove to AL today. Spent the day with my Uncles, which is always an adventure. My Uncle's stories about tending cattle, dirt roads and playing poker in the woods behind the cotton mill is a sharp contrast to the boom in development that my hometown is seeing right now, thanks to their new Kia plant. I don't think either of my Uncles is terribly happy about the changes that are taking place in their little town. Movies Beau and I have been watching movies a lot lately. Watched "Pirates Of The Caribbean: World’s End", which was, in my opinion, a convoluted mess for the most part. Maybe if I’d watched all 3 movies at once, it would have made more sense. I loved the make-up and costumes though. Except for the Asian get-up on Elizabeth. Not sure what they were thinking there. I absolutely hated the ending. I’m not a person that expects a happy ending for every movie I see. Quite the opposit, really. I generally appreciate a non-Hollywood ending. But I wanted Pirates to come to a happier conclusion, dammit! Next we saw "Enchanted" which was funny, romantic and very happy. If there was any message there at all it was this: Magic is everywhere. You just have to look for it. Beau enjoyed it too, which kinda surprised me. It wasn’t as chick-flickish as I was afraid it was going to be. Last, and best of all, we saw "No Country For Old Men", which was absolutely brilliant. It deserved every Oscar it won. The storyline was unique and the movie was filled with witty dialogue and unusual characters. If you grew up in the South, I’m sure you know people just like the ones in "No Country..". The Coen Brothers have a real talent for filling their films with extraordinary characters. But "No Counrty.." is depressing and sad and is a bleak social commentary about the lure of money and what it can do to destroy people. Not a happy movie, but more than worth a watch. Anybody seen anything lately they’d recommend? Current Mood: nerdyCurrent Music: Opium - Ottmar Liebert | | Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 | | 1:02 am |
Busy Week! Friends and Frolicon!! I’ve had such a busy week that I keep forgetting to write an update blog.... Last Sunday Beau and I spent the evening with Victoria and Derrick. We drove downtown to R.Thomas for dinner, then back to our house to enjoy wine and good conversation. They brought over a most amazing bottle of wine called Eiswein that is now my most favorite of all. I must have more! YUM!!! We always have such a great time with them. Tuesday night I managed to break a tooth, so Wednesday was spent at my dentist’s office fixing it. Not fun. Thursday was the beginning of Frolicon, which was held at the Hilton in Peachtree Corners again this year. Very nice hotel. Not a lot going on when we got there, so we went to Roswell and had dinner at the Brookwood Diner. Got back to the hotel in time to meet up with a bunch of friends and see Effie’s Club Follies, which was comedy and burlesque. Drank lots. Met new friends. Had a great time. Friday was spent mostly hanging out with HugMe and Sara. Dinner at Sushi Yoko and bought sweets in the Japanese grocery next door. Later that night we went to the Dong Show (an adult version of the Gong Show), peeked in on the Most Spankable Ass contest and cruised around the parties a bit. Saturday we went to see hypnotist Dave Fonteneau, which was fun. And saw the Known World Players performance of "Raid On The Marquis’ Dungeon", which was even more fun and had great costumes. Later we really, really enjoyed the Big Mama Burlesque show. They’re pretty amazing. We were sad that most of the parties died out early this year. Luckily we ran into a friend who had started a party in his room just for that reason. Met more fun people. Drank some yummy concoctions. Had a lot of laughs and talked books. Much fun. Several people have asked me what Frolicon is. The short answer is that it’s an adult convention that focuses on alternative lifestyles. But that really doesn’t do it justice. Check out their MySpace (see my friends list) or Google their website. Beau and I mostly go because the majority of our friends are there. And the parties are always fun. And I get to test-drive my Dragon Con costumes. I’ll use any excuse to dress up! And it’s just FUN. We always meet a lot of nice people there and we always have a blast. I’m still recovering. Tornado in downtown Atlanta It’s really amazing to watch the news and see all the devastation in downtown Atlanta. It looks like a war zone. Two huge torches in Centenial Park snapped off at the base. Windows blown out of the Omni hotel, CNN, and countless other huge buildings. Some brick buildings have collapsed or have fallen, in part, on the street and onto cars. Part of an overhead walkway broke off and fell onto the street. Huge signs, street lighs and power poles down in the streets. There’s a huge, gaping hole in the Civic Center. Part of the roof was blown off the GA Dome, and the pressure burst pipes inside the Dome. As a result there’s a pretty waterfall flowing down the stairs there. So far the official injury count is at 20, none serious. But there’s also at least one collapsed condo building where 4 floors have pancaked - fallen one onto another. And the building is so unstable that they can’t even go in to search for survivors. I never thought I’d see something like that in downtown Atlanta! When the storm was ripping through downtown, I was sitting on my front porch, wine glass in hand, enjoying the lightening. I had no idea that the storm was much worse just a few miles away until one of my uncles called to check on me. And there are supposedly worse storms heading this way as I type. Oh joy. I hope everybody stays safe out there. Current Mood: worriedCurrent Music: "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" - Gnarls Barkley | | Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 | | 2:45 am |
Weekend party/dinner I was lucky enough to have the weekend off. Beau and I went to a surprise birthday party for DaMovieGuy, also known as Alex. It was thrown by his lovely wife, Talley. Got the super tour of their beautiful new home. My favorite room was the movie-theatre-in-progress room! Next to having a library and a cemetery, our next home must have a movie room. So I'm quite envious of Alex & Talley's movie space! Got to see a couple of old friends and met some interesting new people (a chocolatier and a stunt man among them). Had a great time just hanging out and talking. Ended our night at home eating grilled cheese English muffins (don't ask) and watching Penn & Teller's Bullshit. Sunday we had dinner at R.Thomas, which was excellent as always. We have a new favorite waiter named Johnny. Johnny is the most efficent and non-annoying waiter ever. And he never lets my coffee cup go unfilled. Johnny rocks. Random video rental question......We use Netflix and have been really happy with them up until about a month ago. They went from taking 1 - 2 days to get a movie to us to taking 3 - 10 days. Anybody else having problems? Anybody ever use Blockbuster's dvds-by-mail service? Just wondering if it's time to switch?

The Joys of Retail Beau is always amused by the customer stories I come home with every day, so I thought I'd share a few of the questions that customers have asked me recently....
"Do you have the Wrath Of Grapes?" "What's fiction?" "How do I get to the second floor?" (My store doesn't HAVE a second floor) "Where is the front of the store?" "I saw a book last week and I can't remember the title of it. Can you tell me what book it was." Now sometimes this is possible if the customer can describe the book in question, but this lady didn't remember ANYTHING about the book she wanted. Apparently she thinks we can pull the title out of her head cavity? "If somebody put a book back in the wrong place, where would it be?" "I saw a book in a Barnes & Noble in Texas about three years ago. It was blue and had a picture of the Eiffel Tower on it. Do you have it?" And at least twice a day somebody asks us to find a book that they don't know the title or author of. Or asks what they have to do to check out a book. Of if they can photocopy something. My job.....an endless source of amusement! | | Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 | | 2:59 am |
SC/Jesse James/Lolita We spent the weekend in SC, visiting Beau's family. Had a very nice time. I have the good fortune of having a mother-in-law that I absolutely love and get along wonderfully with. We always have a blast together. I also adore Beau's sister and her husband. They're good people. I wish we got to see them more often. I spent today in AL with my Uncles. They're 79 and 84 and they're both dealing with some serious health issues. I really should try to visit them more than I do. Watched "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford" and it was brilliant. It's sad that it didn't have more of a run and get more press than it did. Casey Affleck really deserved that Oscar nomination. Also saw "The Devil's Backbone", which was one of Guillermo (sp?) Del Toro's earlier movies. It was a ghost story set in an orphanage during the Spanish civil war, which seems to be a favorite subject of his. Really atmospheric, sad and spooky. TokyoPop is now releasing an American version of the Gothic & Lolita Bible. I bought one as soon as they came out of the box last Thursday. Sooooooo many pretty clothes! Now I want to go to Japan! Characters/Dogs/Mail One of the coolest things about living in Atlanta is that it's full of the most interesting people. I was reminded of this driving to work today when I drove past Liberty Tax Service. They have a guy dressed in a Statue Of Liberty costume on the sidewalk in front of their business to attract customers. But unlike the Statue Of Liberty guys I've seen in the past, just walking around and waving, this guy is doing a very enthusiastic dance of sorts that looks like a combination of prayer and Tai Chi. I'm quite sure he increased their business today! Beau and I also met a guy bussing tables at La Madeline this weekend that grew up in the Berkley area of California in the 60's. He had seen everybody from Jimi Hendrix to Miles Davis in their heyday and had been a part of the legendary free love generation. He had some amazing stories. We watched the Westminster dog show last week and Beau is now dying to adopt a Neopolatin Mastiff. As much as I love big dogs and as much as I think Neopolatin Mastiffs are incredibly cool, I don't think that it would be the best dog for us. First off, they can be 200 pounds or more and have been known to move furniture. And all dogs tend to step on feet a lot. I can't imagine getting stepped on by a 200 pound dog. Ouch! And Beau is an absolute neat freak. Neopolatins drool a LOT, are messy eaters and tend to slobber when they drink water. Maybe I can steer him towards an English Mastiff instead? We probably won't be adopting anything else anytime soon anyway though. Two dogs are quite enough at the moment. Must stay off Petfinder!!! We think that some of our outgoing mail was stolen from our mailbox. Four bills that I mailed in Jan never made it to their destinations. I may have to change my checking account and have at least one credit card re-issued. I've hear the warnings for years about not using your home mailbox for bills, but I always thought that we were safe since we lived in a nice neighborhood. Guess not. | | Tuesday, February 12th, 2008 | | 3:30 am |
First Snow/Early Valentines Beau surprised me with early Valentines presents this weekend. He gave me flowers in all shades of purples and pinks. He also bought me a gorgeous set of heavy tapestry-like curtains for the boudoir. They look like something out of a New Orleans bordello, which happens to be my favorite decorating style! And he made my favorite dinner on Sunday night - his ungodly yummy honey-pecan chicken. YUM! I love my husband! We watched a really good movie on Sunday too called First Snow. It was the story of a smarmy sales guy (Guy Pearce) who visits a fortume teller just to pass the time when his car breaks down in the middle of the desert and he's waiting to get it fixed. Fortune teller reveals life-changing predictions. Guy Pearce's character gets obsessed with what he's told and skids off the rails. It's really dark but a great movie. Brings up that question that I love to discuss with people...."If you could know the date that you're going to die, would you want to know?". Well.....would you? Beau says no. He thinks that's just too morbid. I would definitely want to know. Not knowing when you're going to die is like being at an amusement park and not knowing what time they're going to close! Discuss. Speaking of dark... If you like dark tv shows, and you haven't caught Breaking Bad on AMC, catch it! It's one of the most unique shows I've ever seen. It feels more like an independent film than a tv show. And it's one of the darkest, grossest and most jarring tv shows I've seen in a long time.

LaGrange I spent the day with my Uncles in AL, then went to a wake for my cousin Kathy in LaGrange, GA. She was found dead on Sunday and they haven't determined her cause of death yet. She was 46 but the last time I saw her alive, which was at another funeral a few months ago, she looked 56. We spent a lot of time together when we were kids, but she started skidding off the rails as sson as she hit her teens. Her Dad tells me that she and her husband were overly fond of perscription meds, which may have been a factor in her death. Her 18-year-old daughter seems to be following in her footsteps, sadly enough. When I got home I was surprised to find our old roommate Darren hanging out with Beau. It was good to see him. We drank some wine, had some laughs and talked about the "old days". Current Mood: nostalgicCurrent Music: Stereophonics | | Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 | | 2:51 am |
Infernal houses, wild horses, Cajun food and Russian mobsters. Beau and I had the weekend off. Spent Saturday cleaning the house. Everything got a thorough dusting, washing and/or changing. After working me to death Beau went off to write music, so I dove into my mountain of reading material. Just started a trashy horror novel - House Infernal by Edward Lee. And I just bought another of Bukowski's poetry collections - The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over The Hills. That guy breaks my heart. His poetry just bleeds. But he's by far my favorite poet. Sunday we had dinner at Papadeux, and it's the first time we've ever been able to just walk in and be seated. The wait is usually an hour or more. Thanks Super Bowl!!! Later we watched "Eastern Promises" which was really great. Made me want to learn more about the Russian mob and their life-story tattoos. Monsters, hospitals and a birthday Sunday Beau and I drove to AL to spend the day at the hospital with my Uncle Red. He's still in the ICU, but at least they've moved him to an actual room in that ward. He's been diagnosed with atrial defibulation (SP?), which is a skipping of his heartbeat. He's been in the ICU a week and they are still trying to get his heart to beat correctly. They are talking about doing a proceedure where they stop his heart, then shock it to restart it. Or installing a pacemaker. I just wish they'd give us a plan of action. I can't understand why it's taking them so long to decide what to do. Later that night Beau and I watched "Oswald's Ghost" on PBS. It was a really fascinating documentary about the JFK asassination, and had a LOT of photos, newsreels and interviews that I'd never seen before. Monday was Beau's birthday. We bought his mandolin at Guitar Center, then went to Hidalgo for Mexican food. Later we went to see "Cloverfield", which I loved! It was exactly what I expected (big, scary monster attacking NYC), and I loved that the entire story was told from a shaky personal video camera point of view. And the movie was scary, intense and avoided the "hollywood ending" that I so despise. It was well worth the money! Later we watched a history channel special that was entitled something like "The World Without Us", which told in graphic detail what would happen to our civilization if people suddenly disappeared. It was really interesting to see what the earth would be like if it was only inhabited by plants, ocean life and animals. Finally finished Robert McCammon's latest book, "The Queen Of Bedlam" and it was brilliant! If you like books with history, interesting characters and loads of mystery go pick this one up....and his other books too while you're at it. He's one of my favorite writers. The Orphanage, snow and cake Beau and I were supposed to be spending this weekend in SC, with his Mom. It's what he wanted to do for his birthday, which is Monday. But just as we got on the road to drive up there yesterday Beau's Mom called and told us that she thought that the weather was going to get nasty and that we should probably think about rescheduling our trip. So we turned the car around, checked the weather channel and decided that we didn't want to risk getting stuck in SC. It didn't help that my Uncle Red is in the hospital with heart problems. I've been assured that he's doing okay, and everybody was telling me to go on and go to SC, but we were afraid that if the roads were icy and something happened to my Uncle, we wouldn't be able to get back right away. So here we are, still in GA. Last night we had yummy Japanese food at Sake Gura, looked at mandolins at Guitar Center (what Beau wants for his birthday), then went to the movies. We saw The Orphanage, which was a good, old-fashioned ghost story that scared the daylights out of me. Beau and I both loved it. I really appreciated the twist, non-Hollywood ending that I totally didn't see coming. After the movie we went to the Snellville Diner for cake and coffee and ended up chatting with the manager and waitresses there till 4am. I love quirky night people. They're a different breed. Today we slept late, then played in the snow. I can't believe we've gotten snow twice this year! It's so pretty!!! Movies, snow, etc. Yesterday we had SNOW! It was really beautiful and made everything look pure and magical for a few hours. Then it turned to rain and slush as snow has a tendency to do in the South. *sigh* I took Beau to Bonefish for an early birthday dinner, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. We were supposed to go to the movies afterwards (to see The Orphanage), but since we were concerned about the roads becoming icy, we opted to get cheesecake at Barnes & Noble, take it back home and eat it in front of the fireplace. Very nice and cozy. Is it wrong that we've been watching the first episodes of American Idol to giggle at the crazy people who show up to audition? It's the epitome of "guilty" pleasure for me because a lot of the more "unique" contestants absolutely crack me up, but then I feel SOOOOO guilty for being amused by them. But I can't stop watching. Now Beau and I are playing "Spot the goof" - guessing which people are truely crazy and which ones are just pretending to be outrageous to get their 15 minutes of fame on tv - like the Paula Abdul stalker guy and the large, hairy man who showed up in a Slave Girl Leia costume. Yikes!!! We've also seen a few movies lately. Went to the theatre to see "Sweeney Todd". I really liked it, but wasn't crazy about some of the songs. A couple of them were a bit too over-the-top Broadway for me. But the costumes and sets were absolutely amazing. And of course Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter were beautifully psychotic and quite chilling. It's definitely worth seeing on the big screen. Next we watched "Hairspray" (2007) on dvd. Beau lasted for about 15 minutes and fled in horror during the 2nd song and dance number. I thought the movie was fun, but have no idea why it got so many great reviews and so much hype. It was okay at best, but definitely not the best musical I've seen in the last year. Best would probably be either "Sweeney Todd" or "Across The Universe". Watched "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" on dvd, which was a great movie, but was incredibly depressing. But if you've ever read the book of the same name, on the Native American massacre at Wounded Knee, then you know the whole, sad story already. It's one of the worst times in American history, and really hits close to my heart since my Grandfather was Blackfoot. Then a few days ago we saw one of the best movies I've seen in a long time - "Fido". It's a zombie movie, a comedy and a bit of a social commentary. It's inventive, funny and one of the most unique movies I've ever seen. "Fido" is set in a fictionalized Tim Burton-esque 1950's after a zombie war has swept the earth. Scientists developed a collar that would tame and domesticate the zombies, turning them into pets, servants & companions. But of course the collars malfunction sometimes and hilarity and bloodshed insue. I've never seen anything quite like "Fido" and I think everybody should run out and rent it. Beau's birthday is Monday (1/21) and we're going to visit his Mom this weekend. Should be fun if the weather doesn't get ugly. The flu sucks I'm on Day 4 of having the flu and it sucks. My body hasn't ached like this since I was in a car wreck years ago. And my lungs feel (and sound) like they're stuffed with wet cotton. Beau is being an angel, as usual, making sure I have everything I need. I wish I'd gotten the flu shot months ago, but just kept putting it off. So, if you haven't gotten a flu shot...go get one NOW! I guess the only bright side to being sick is that I'm half-way through both books that I'm reading (Queen of Bedlam by Robert McCammon and the bio of a California librarian - Free For All). Drank entirely too much and have come to the painful conclusion that the Green Fairy is not my friend. As usual I didn't make very many resolutions: Read more. Travel more. Take more pictures. Looking forward to a good year in 2008. Got to spend some time with a few good friends a few days ago. Mike, Brianna & Chloe came by for a few hours, and we had a blast with them.
